Research: Cold sore prevention
Licensed Products Current Research Management Contact Home	Epitome Pharmaceuticals has applied for patent on a lip balm formulation containing 1% Vitamin C and 2% green tea extract, as well as an enhancer for absorption. The formulation delivers significant amounts of these prized ingredients into the lips, without leaving a greasy feel. Green tea extract prevents damage from UV light and reduces chapping of the lips better than conventional chap sticks. Several patients have prevented occurrence of cold sores repeatedly by twice-daily use of the balm. Epitome has designed a testing program with Dr. Spotswood Spruance of University of Utah Medical School, the leading authority on cold sore medications. This program would lead to FDA approval of the medication for the prevention or prophylactic treatment of cold sores within four years; there are no topical medications currently approved for this indication.
